Italian firm Bio-on has launched a new line of cosmetic ingredients featuring bioplastic micro powders.

These high-performance sun protection factor (SPF) boosters are made from Bio-on’s biodegradable bioplastic microscopic spheres or capsules.

The new ingredient is developed to reduce skin damage risks due to ultraviolet (UV) light and increase water-resistance.

One of the first products to utilise the ingredient, the minerv bio cosmetics portfolio includes minervPHB Riviera and minervPHB Riviera Plus.

minervPHB Riviera was developed for use in all solar formulations while the antioxidant-enriched Riviera Plus is suitable for use in skincare, make-up and haircare products.

Bio-on chairman and CEO Marco Astorri said: “Riviera represents another building block in our green cosmetics revolution to make the personal care market truly sustainable and fully respect the ocean and the land.

The minerv bio portfolio also includes texturising powders for skincare and make-up, as well as mattifiers, scrubs, and microcapsules for anti-ageing treatments.

Bio-on’s CNS business unit was involved in the research and development (R&D) of the new SPF Boosters line.

Bio-on Plants industrial facility is located in Castel San Pietro Terme, Bologna, and will start the production of all minerv bio cosmetics products from this summer.

The company expects to invest €20m to produce 1,000t a year of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) micro powders over an area of 3,000m2.
