Malaysia’s NPRA bans seven cosmetics

Malaysia’s National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) has banned seven cosmetic products that were found to contain mercury, hydroquinone, and tretinoin.

Ezzueriche Wellness' Night Glowing, Babiez Glow Skincare's Glowing Speed Gold Day Cream and Glowing Speed Gold Night Cream, and Ortus Expert Cosmetics' Royal Expert Whitening Cream were found to contain mercury, while Ezzueriche Wellness' Night Glow, Vida Beauty's Qu Gebu AP Krim, and Elsuhaz's Nour Ain Night Cream comprised hydroquinone and tretinoin.

Mercury is generally used in skin lightening and anti-ageing formulations, while hydroquinone is utilised in products for skin lightening and blemishes and tretinoin for acne and wrinkles.

Reportedly, mercury exposure affects the kidneys, nervous system, brain development, and may cause skin rashes and irritation. Hydroquinone is said to cause skin redness, discomfort, skin discolouration, hypersensitivity, and inhibition of pigmentation process, while tretinoin may lead to redness, discomfort, stinging, peeling, and sensitivity of the skin.

The Ministry of Health has warned all sellers and distributors to immediately cease the sale of these cosmetics and that any violation may result in fines or imprisonment.

The NPRA urged customers to not use these products and consult a healthcare professional in case of unpleasant effects or adverse events.
