Prestige beauty market in China shines in 2011: Report

Prestige beauty market in China, comprising skincare, makeup, and fragrance, has surged by 21% in 2011 over 2010, according to a beauty market research by The NPD Group.

The skincare and makeup segments have also grown by 23% and 17%, respectively, during 2011 compared to the previous year.

Face essence has dominated all the categories within the prestige skincare market with 25% growth, leaving behind others including face moisturiser, face basic care, eye care, sun treatment, body care, hair care, lip care, nail care, etc.

According to the report, anti-aging category by attribute stood atop with 27% in 2011, followed by hydrating at 19% and whitening at 15%.

In the makeup category, the face segment was pegged at a whopping 59% in dollar share and 18% in dollar sales over 2010, mainly driven by the demand for the products focusing on making faces appear lighter and smoother such as makeup base and foundation.

Lipcare also contributed to makeup market’s growth with 26.5% in 2011, with increased sales experienced by lipstick at 31% and lip gloss at 22%.

Owing to the slowdown in eye shadow and eye liner sales, the eye products category could post marginal sales growth of 6%, the report observed.

NPD has considered the sales of skincare, makeup, and fragrance products in various department stores and Sephora stores in the top ten cities of China for the report.
