Indians spend more on eye make-up, says study

Indians spend usually more on eye make-up than other make-ups, finds a new study by the UK-based research Canadean – Health & Beauty.

According to the report ‘Consumer Trends in the Make-up Market in India, 2011’, the market value of eye make-up segment accounted for 42% of the country’s overall make-up industry during the year.

Face make-up stands next with 28%, followed by nail make-up and lip make-up pegged at 23% and 6% respectively.

The positions of the top two segments interchanged in volume terms, with face make-up leading the industry accounting for close to 48%, while eye make-up remained at 26%.

Changing age structures among Indians was observed to be the chief driving force for the overall make-up industry in the country.

More than 45% customers stated that this trend to have influenced their consumption during 2011, closely followed by changing lifestages with 40% customers citing it.

These two trends topped the list of even segment-wise trend analysis, performed by Canadean as part of this survey.

Indian kids and babies have outpaced even the early young adults in terms of market value clinching about 20% market share, while the latter stood next at 19% in the age-group analysis.

Among the educated fraternity, post-graduates have shown increased fondness towards make-up by accounting for more than 38%, followed only by undergraduates with about 18%.

In 2011, affluent Indians have taken away the major share of the make-up industry with close to 42%, followed by 22% of the customers who are hard pressed for wealth.

Interestingly, the Indians with poor time at their disposal averaging just about one to three hours of leisure time per day spend more on their make-up needs. This group accounted for a significant 35.6% market share in 2011.

In India, where urban-rural divide is at 90%-10%, private label products have made only a moderate penetration during the year. In all the segments, the branded products have retained share ranging between 92% and 96%.
